Frequently Asked Questions

Why did you write the book?

"Simply, I wrote the book as a guide because a lot of artists have asked me a lot of questions, which leads me to believe that something like this is needed and will hopefully be useful to many artists.
I will say this later but repeat it here: I am not an accountant, I am not a business manager, I am not a tax attorney. I am an artist, with good years of management experience and about twelve years in the business of being an artist as a sole means of support. I stand by my good eyes and ears, a fair dose of common sense and will stand proud behind every word in the book.
As in hiking, I highly recommend experience as the best guide, although hiking is safer and much more fun when you have a sketchy map, a good compass, and the guiding words of someone who has been on the trail before. As a good guide should, I hope to either enlighten you a little on the virtues and perils of this particular trail or to scare the bejabbers out of you; either way I will have done my job."

About the Author

Maria Arango the happy author

"I was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1959. A one-and-a-half year old child cannot remember what it was like to have our homes and businesses taken over by the regime of Fidel Castro. In any case, we took a long ship-ride to Spain right about when Cuba turned communist. I was raised in Barcelona, Spain until 1974. In a sense, I still think of Spain as home, a home that will be undoubtedly changed if and when I return to visit. There again, hard for me to remember the political turmoil of Franco's impending death and the threat of socialism. Time for another long trip! This time my family and I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, where we were reunited with my father's family, also previously exiled from Cuba. I have loved art all my life and earned a few stripes at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, although I basically learned the art of the woodcut on my own. I am now making a living as a full-time artist.

ARTISTIC BIOGRAPHY
Maria Arango earned BS and MS degrees in Psychology and Exercise Physiology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas before taking a variety of fine and graphic art classes. Printmaking changed her life forever and she spent a few years of honing her skills and amassing a body of work, primarily in woodcut prints.
Maria has been exhibited in several galleries in the Las Vegas area as well as the Las Vegas Art Museum, and has quickly expanded to regional, national and international shows. Maria’s accomplishments include Best of Show/Category Awards in the Art Fest of Henderson, Boulder City Art in the Park and Tempe Festival of the Arts and purchase awards including works in the Springfield Museum of Art. Most recently works have been accepted in the prestigious Brand Gallery and Art Center in California in their annual juried works on paper exhibition, the Parkside National Small Print Exhibition and Hunterdon Museum of Art. In 2005 she was honored with the Nevada Governor’s Visual Arts Commission Award. She has been represented by various galleries through the Southwest and her works reside in permanent collections in the US and Worldwide. Art Festivals throughout the West continue to be Maria’s favorite venue for meeting her fast growing audience of dedicated collectors.
A lifetime goal of completing 1000 Woodcuts progresses heartily as do many various other projects in printmaking, writing, and life in general."
